The late J.W. Gallagher and his son Don first met Doc Watson and his son Merle at a music epiphone supernova union jack
festival in 1968. They handed Doc one of their guitars, and he liked it. They told him to keep it. From that point forward, Doc Watson played Gallagher guitars.
In 1974, Gallagher Guitar Co. designed a new model especially for Watson, and the Wartrace-based company has sold a line of guitars named for Watson ever since.
Doc Watson elevated the role of the acoustic guitar to the status of a lead instrument in American traditional music - right along side of the fiddle and banjo. Before Doc, the guitar was used primarily as a rhythm instrument in a supporting role. Doc raised the bar with his playing, and set a new standard for guitarists to achieve.
